New Degree Program At Furman Targets School Administrators

July 31, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – July 30, 2010 – School administrators looking to upgrade their leadership skills and advance their careers will have the opportunity to earn a specialist degree from Furman University under a program set for launch in August.

Graduate Studies in Education will begin offering courses leading to the educational specialist (Ed.S.) in educational leadership. The Ed.S. is awarded for study beyond a master’s degree but below a doctorate.

Ideal candidates for the program are assistant principals and principals. They seek an additional level of certification and likely aspire to move into an assistant superintendent’s or superintendent’s post in a school district, according to Troy Terry, graduate studies director at Furman.

Furman initially expects to enroll 15 to 20 students in the program, he said.

“In our first cohort, we are targeting our graduates who are already in administration. We eventually may have some folks who are still in the classroom,” Terry added.

Furman identified the need for the program when alumni indicated they’d like the opportunity to earn the Ed.S. degree at Furman. “Clearly there was a consensus from our grads that they would like to continue at Furman if possible,” Terry said.

The program (11 courses/33 credits) can be completed in just under three years. Students who begin in the fall of 2010 can expect to finish in May of 2013. Tuition is expected to be comparable to that charged students earning a master’s degree at Furman (currently $375 per credit hour or $1,125 per course).
