New exhibit in the historic textiles gallery opens April 3: Shapes of Summer – Historic Bathing Suits

March 4, 2020
Early “swimming” for men and women were generally done separately and were constricted by cumbersome costumes and privacy regulations. Not until the 1920s and 1930s were the first real changes in attitudes toward both genders bathing or swimming together realized. With that came a significant change in bathing fashion and stockings became an article of the past. Bathing suits (or swimsuits) were now knitted, form-following and functional.

Shapes of Summer: Historic Bathing Suits will be open in the Museum’s Historic Textiles Gallery April 3 through September 7, 2020.
