New “Experience Gullah” website and App bring Gullah Geechee history to life on Hilton Head

October 1, 2025

Hilton Head Island’s Gullah Geechee heritage now has a new digital home. The Gullah Geechee Historic Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation (CDC) has officially launched the Experience Gullah website and wayfinding app, an interactive guide that showcases the culture, landmarks, and stories of the Island’s Gullah Geechee community.

Designed for both residents and visitors, the app provides a unique way to explore Hilton Head’s history through storytelling and site visits. Users can access background on important people and places while navigating to cultural landmarks around the Island.

At launch, the Experience Gullah app features seven key sites:

  • Old School House Park – Site of Hilton Head’s first consolidated public elementary school, opened in 1954.

  • Robinson Junior High (Historical Marker) – Former school for African American students in grades 6–8.

  • Driessen Beach Park – A popular beach gathering spot for African American residents and visitors.

  • Fisherman’s Co-op – Once home to Black fishermen who powered the Island’s shrimping industry and successfully opposed a proposed chemical plant.

  • Fish Camp (Former Simmons Fishing Camp) – Operated by Capt. Charlie Simmons, Sr., this site was a vital hub for transporting goods to Savannah and ferrying Islanders.

  • Barnwell Tabby Ruins – Built between 1730 and 1750, these ruins reflect West African building traditions brought by enslaved Africans.

  • Historic Mitchelville – Established in 1862, the nation’s first self-governed town for formerly enslaved people.

The initiative serves a dual purpose: to preserve and share Gullah Geechee culture for future generations and to offer visitors a deeper understanding of Hilton Head’s heritage beyond the beaches and resorts.

“This project is about more than technology—it’s about honoring our ancestors and ensuring their stories remain part of our community’s identity,” said leaders from the Gullah Geechee CDC.

The Experience Gullah app is now available for download in app stores, and the companion website provides additional stories, images, and resources for those who want to learn more.
