New health company announces corporate and board leadership positions

The new health company – using the working name of SC Health Company which was formed by a partnership between Greenville Health System (GHS) and Palmetto Health – is announcing its corporate and board leadership. This team will direct the company’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of all South Carolinians. The corporate leaders selected have previously served in senior positions at GHS or Palmetto Health, ensuring that best practices and traditions from the legacy organizations will be preserved in the new company. The two health care systems are now referred to as the Upstate Affiliate (GHS) and the Midlands Affiliate (Palmetto Health).

These new leaders are charged with building their leadership teams, which includes realigning and restructuring positions and processes where needed. The goal is to maximize in-house leadership talent as necessary changes are made to achieve the full potential of the new company. The organization is grateful to all the legacy leaders at the two affiliates for their significant and meaningful contributions, which serve as the solid foundation on which this new company is being built.

The new SC Health Company leaders include:

Joseph (Joe) J. Blake Jr., Chief Governance Officer (CGO)

Blake is responsible for the coordination and management of all boards that relate to SC Health Company. He also will oversee the audit and compliance functions for the health company. Previously, he served as vice president and chief legal officer of the GHS Strategic Coordinating Organization (SCO). Blake has been with GHS for 10 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington & Lee University and a juris doctor degree from Emory University.

Michael Hildebrand, Chief of Staff

Hildebrand is responsible for ensuring efficient operations of the Office of the co-CEOs. Previously, he served as chief of staff to the chief executive officer of the GHS SCO. He has been with GHS for four years. Hildebrand received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA in international management from Columbia Southern University.

Malcolm Isley, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO)

Isley will oversee strategy development for the health company and its affiliates. He also is responsible for strategic planning, business/network development, real estate, facilities, marketing and communications, and public relations. Previously, Isley served as vice president and chief strategy officer of the GHS SCO. He has been with GHS for 10 years. Isley received a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University and a master’s degree in health administration from Duke University.

Terri T. Newsom, Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Newsom is responsible for all financial functions of the health company and its affiliates, including accounting, treasury, budgeting, revenue cycle and contracting. Previously, she served as vice president of Financial Services and chief financial officer for GHS. Newsom has been with GHS for six years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Appalachian State University and is a certified public accountant.

Gregory (Greg) J. Rusnak, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO)

Rusnak is directly accountable to the Affiliate presidents to ensure operations in the Upstate and Midlands are supporting the health company. He also is responsible for information technology/services, human resources, and supply chain functions within the health company, as well as overseeing all Affiliate chief operating officers, post-acute care, and ancillary and support services. Previously, he served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for GHS. Rusnak has been with GHS for 21 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Gannon University and a master’s degree in health services administration from George Washington University.

John J. Singerling III, FACHE, President, Palmetto Health/Midlands Affiliate

Singerling is responsible for leading Palmetto Health to ensure efficient operations, engaged team members, physicians and volunteers, and delivering high-quality patient care. Palmetto Health is comprised of six acute-care hospitals and numerous ambulatory services, staffed by more than 14,000 team members including a 1,100 member medical staff. Singerling also is the chair of the board of directors for the Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group with nearly 100 practices and more than 100 locations. He has been with Palmetto Health for 22 years. Singerling earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of South Carolina.

Angelo Sinopoli, M.D., Chief Clinical Officer (CCO)

Sinopoli is responsible for clinical care and the development of clinical integration, quality and population health strategy for the health company and its affiliates. He also is responsible for the Care Coordination Institute, MyHealth First Network, Palmetto Health Quality Collaborative, community health and medical informatics. Previously, Angelo served as executive vice president and chief clinical officer of the GHS SCO. He has been with GHS for 30 years. Sinopoli earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of South Carolina and a medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He holds a professorship position at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville.

Spence M. Taylor, M.D., President, Greenville Health System/Upstate Affiliate

Taylor is responsible for leading GHS to ensure efficient operations, engaged employees and physicians, and high-quality patient care. GHS is comprised of eight medical campuses, over 180 physician practice sites and more than 14,000 employees including over 1,100 physicians and providers. Taylor has been with GHS for 25 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Clemson University and a medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Howard West, General Counsel

As general counsel, West is responsible for providing and coordinating all legal services for the health company and affiliates. He also is responsible for overseeing the governmental affairs functions throughout the health company. Previously, he served as the chief legal officer for Palmetto Health. West has been with Palmetto Health for nearly 39 years. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He also earned a master’s degree in hospital administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and he earned his juris doctor from the University of Virginia.

The SC Health Company Board of Directors will ensure the newly announced leadership team is guided and supported as they work together. Newly elected Board of Directors leaders include:

• James (Rick) E. Wheeler, chair. Wheeler is vice president of M-D MetalSource in Columbia. He was previously the chair of the Palmetto Health Tuomey Board of Directors and chair of the Palmetto Health Board of Directors.
• Michelle B. Seaver, vice chair. Seaver is the president of United Community Bank for Greenville County in Greenville. She has served on numerous boards including GHS’ Women’s Advisory Council and Greenville Community Foundation.
