New horticulture position and garden promotion announced at Magnolia

Like a maturing plant anchored in the soil, the garden staff at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is growing with a staff promotion and a new employee.
Katherine Reeves White has been promoted to horticulturist. She will supervise the Gilliard Garden Center, the greenhouse and an increasing number of volunteers who help maintain America’s oldest garden.
A graduate of the horticulture program at Trident Technical College, White had been assistant horticulturist. In the summer of 2011, she was the first American student to represent Magnolia during a horticultural internship in France sponsored by Magnolia and the French Heritage Society in Paris.
White said, “It is my goal to continue the horticultural legacy of Magnolia by preserving our historic plant collections and expanding our active volunteer program.”
She will supervise Stephanie Hendler, who has been selected for the newly created position of floriculturist. Hendler will be responsible for increasing the number of floral displays throughout the gardens.
She has a wide range of academic and commercial greenhouse and landscape experience. Hendler earned a horticulture degree in 2011 at the University of Wisconsin. She was an agriculture research technician at the University of Hawaii and a sales representative and greenhouse horticulturist at the Folly’s Garden Center in Madison, Wi.
