Nickelodeon Theatre Celebrates Move up Main Street with Nick Parade This Thursday

October 1, 2012

COLUMBIA, SC – October 1, 2012 – The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house film theater, which has moved to its renovated, larger, state-of-the-art space at 1607 Main Street will celebrate its first month in the theater’s new home by hosting a Nick Parade on Main Street on Thursday, Oct. 4, as part of First Thursdays on Main and in conjunction with Main Street Merchants.

“The move has been a long time coming, and to celebrate this major step for the theater as an arts organization, we decided a monumental parade with a diverse group of participants from all over Columbia would be an entertaining way to highlight the unique groups and arts organizations in our city,” said Andy Smith, executive director of the Nickelodeon Theatre. “We’re planning for this event to be a little quirky, and a lot of fun. It’s a one-time event to celebrate the first month in our new home.”

WHEN: Thursday, October 4, 7 p.m. (Main Street between Lady and Blanding Streets will be closed to non-parade traffic from 6:30 – 8 p.m.)
NICK PARADE PARTICIPANTS:
The Nick is proud to have Nimbaya, a djembe drum and dance company of Guinea that’s temporarily based in Columbia, participating in the parade. The group is known for its choreography and rhythms.

Other participants include the Eau Claire High School Marching Band, Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia City Ballet, Double Dutch Forces, Trustus Theatre, Next Door Drummers, Tapp’s Arts Center, Hoop Hounds, Kudzu Queens, Tom Hall and Krewe de Columbi-Ya-Ya and much more.

MORE: The Nickelodeon encourages parade attendees to also check out the other galleries and happenings on Main Street as part of First Thursdays on Main. The Nick will also host a block party following the parade in front of the Nickelodeon Theatre in the 1600 block of Main Street.

At 9 p.m., the Nickelodeon will screen “25 Years & Counting,” a documentary about the 25-year history of the Jam Room Recording Studio in Columbia.
