Nickelodeon Theatre Hosts “Art Docs” Series

January 21, 2016

COLUMBIA, SC – The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house film theater, will host “Art Docs,” a series of curated films about art. From making art to documenting artists and their work, the series, which will take place on Tuesdays from Jan. 26 – Feb. 23, will feature five different films, each coupled with performances or conversations with artists or filmmakers relative to the film.

Art Docs schedule of films (visit Nickelodeon.org for full film synopses):

STATION TO STATION: Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m.: A cross-country compilation of one-minute films of artistic happenings all underwritten by the American railway. These clips are a blend of thoughtful, sporadic, vital, silent and confrontational. No matter the effect, the film is an undeniable testament to creativity.

EVERYBODY STREET: Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m.: Accompanying this screening: a short documentary from filmmaker-in-residence, Josh Yates, about South Carolina photographer Dorian Warneck. A tribute to the instinctive and tenacious spirit of New York street photography, Cheryl Dunn’s film features perspectives from some of the most iconic of New York street photographers (and their work) to capture the ever-changing history of the medium and the city itself.

THE MYSTERY OF PICASSO: Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m.: This feature is a joint effort between director and subject to hit upon the mysterious junction of craft, cinema, and Picasso himself. Enjoy watching Picasso take art designed specifically for the film from a sketch, to a brush stroke, to a masterpiece. This screening will be shown with the original soundtrack silenced – and with live music accompaniment from these local and regional bands: Paper Shoes, Academia_, fk mt., Josh the Bird, Designer Audio School, Jade Blocker and Variations.

!WOMEN ART REVOLUTION: Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m.: A short documentary about local artist Michaela Pilar Brown directed by Roni Nicole Henderson will accompany this screening. A provocation and declaration of Feminist Art history from its roots in 1960s counterculture to one of the most significant art movements of the late 20th century, this documentary is a compilation of over 40 years worth of effort to create a portrait of worldwide struggle for women.

TROUBLEMAKERS: THE STORY OF LAND ART: Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m.: Local artists Seth Gadsden and Lauren Greenwald will screen a short documentary about their personal experiences with land art alongside the feature film. This last feature explores one of the most rebellious art movements of the modern era. Director James Crump highlights the questions raised by Land Art–and onerous medium that refuses to be commoditized, that gives into entropy, and that highlights the limits of humanity.

The Nickelodeon is offering a $1 discount to students, as well as a series pass for all screenings with one free screening included for $40. Nickelodeon Theatre members are able to get the series pass for just $30.
