Why are there no Amazon copy cats?

One thing I can’t figure out about Jeff Bezos is this:
With his Amazon success, why does he have so few rivals.
You would think more techies would copy his model.
Gratifying your urge to spend money is his purpose.
That’s a mission worth copying in today’s economy.
He does it online and now in the bricks and mortar world.
Bezos started with books. Now he sells everything.

Last week he invaded the big groceries’ turf.
He bought Whole Foods’ 460 stores for $13.7 billion.
This means he can  sell to you online or in his stores.
And he can deliver to you online or by UPS or drone.
Amazon Prime subscribers pay more for convenience.
Annual memberships give you free delivery.
But Bezos banks big bucks on your membership fee first.
This helps us buy more and ignore what it actually costs.

Business writer Holman Jenkins calls this brilliant.
You’re buying at the highest price you’re willing to pay.
It’s an efficient consumer strategy to sell you more stuff.
Amazon is urging you to buy without comparing prices.
Is your pet food running low? Just order more.
Want a hot new book, CD, or DVD? Just order it online.
Is the price a bargain even with free shipping? Maybe not.
You could google other sites, but why bother? Just order.

Whole Foods presents Bezos with a challenge.
Its same-store sales have been falling for two years.
The entire grocery industry is in free fall.
And the competition is even more intense.
Bezos paid almost $14 billion for Whole Foods.
What is he likely to do with it? More of the same.
He make it easy to shop for more expensive stuff.
Forget you’re paying more. Enjoy the convenience.
Stay home and have it delivered to your door.
He may even be able soon to put ice cream in your fridge.
Or put frozen chicken Kiev in your microwave.
All you have to do it open it and eat it.

What can we learn from this:
1. Make shopping with you as convenient as possible.
2. Make it so easy that comparison shopping is a bore.
3. Deliver it whether ordered in store, online, or by phone.
