Nolan named to Board of Trustees at Trident Hospital

February 20, 2012

CHARLESTON, SC – February 17, 2012 – Dr. Amy Nolan, a 12-year professor of biology at Charleston Southern University, has joined the Board of Trustees at Trident Hospital. Her appointment will last three years.

She will share in the responsibilities of maintaining the hospital’s vision: “Our vision is to be recognized as a compassionate family of diverse healthcare professionals that pride ourselves on delivering exceptional service with quality outcomes for our communities.” (Trident Health System)

Nolan graduated from Charleston Southern in 1994, receiving her undergraduate degree in biology. She then went on to the Medical University of South Carolina where she received her doctorate in cell molecular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics in 1999. After finishing her fellowship at MUSC she came home to her alma mater in 2000, gaining notoriety as the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004.

Currently, Nolan teaches courses in physiology, nutrition, medical terminology, pharmacology and life-science for educators. She is also the academic advisor for the pharmacy club and serves as CSU’s representative to the South Carolina Women in Higher Education Network.

Nolan is honored to be chosen as a member of the Trident board and attributes much of her success to one of her former CSU professors, recently retired Dr. Ken Bonnette. A chemistry professor later promoted to provost, Bonnette recommended Nolan as his successor on Trident’s Board of Trustees. “It is such an honor,” she said, “that he would recommend me.”

This isn’t the first time either. She has been serving on Trident’s Internal Review Board for the past five years, a position she was awarded upon Bonnette’s recommendation as his successor. Now filling his shoes for the second time, she quickly points out that the relationships students develop in their college years can help to facilitate their career goals. “Learning, leading and Serving, that’s what we are here for,” said Nolan.

Nolan said she is proud to perform this duty for her community and is grateful for the opportunity to meet new and interesting people. The added benefit of making these connections with other professionals, she hopes, will enable her to make recommendations for her students, much like Bonnette did for her.
