Non-profit board roles & responsibilities topic of Chamber seminar Sept. 19th
August 21, 2025The Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center’s Non-Profit Council is hosting a half-day seminar on the topic of board governance. The seminar will be on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center located at 311 W. Main St., Lexington, SC.
The seminar, led by Tiffany and Scott Whaley of Grassroots Advisors, is designed to equip non-profit board members and leaders with the skills needed to enhance governance and organizational impact. The event officially begins at 11:15 a.m., with the presentation starting at 11:30 a.m.
Participants will gain valuable knowledge and tools to strengthen their non-profit organizations. The training aims to help attendees:
• Define roles and responsibilities: Clarify the legal duties and essential roles of a board member and understand the dynamics of the partnership between the board and the chief executive.
• Improve board composition: Learn effective strategies for identifying, recruiting, and orienting new board members to ensure long-term sustainability.
• Enhance board effectiveness: Discover how to use committees strategically, cultivate a positive board culture, and implement best practices for ethical decision-making.
• Manage leadership transitions: Proactively address challenges like executive transitions and “founders’ syndrome” to ensure a smooth change in leadership and sustained organizational health.
“This topic is incredibly important for board effectiveness,” said Angelle LaBorde, the Chamber’s President & CEO. “Throughout my thirty-year career, I’ve seen two kinds of boards. The first are aware of their roles and skills, and they consistently achieve their goals. The second, unfortunately, are ineffective due to their lack of understanding about board governance responsibilities and the role of staff. I encourage board leaders to send their staff and board officers to this important seminar.”
The cost is $20 for a single ticket, which includes the program and lunch. Participants are encouraged to bring a board chair, board member, or another staff member, as a special discount offers two tickets for $35. Participants can register at www.lexingtonsc.org/events.
