Sutton Shaw, Volunteer Executive Director, The Big Red Barn Retreat

The Big Red Barn Retreat (BRBR) was built in honor of Leon Irons, who passed away in 2009. Leon served in the Navy out of high school before beginning a successful career in the restaurant business. His family still operates the Sonic Drive-Ins in the Columbia area, as well as some other markets. To honor his life and his love of country, his family opened The Big Red Barn Retreat to help our military in need of healing find peace.

Nestled on 75 idyllic acres in Blythewood, SC, the BRBR provides an array of non-clinical therapeutic services taught by veterans at no cost to our state’s remarkable community of heroes. As a pioneer in the field of military and veteran wellness, BRBR strives to ensure that each guest receives a transformational experience. Their high-impact experiential services include therapeutic yoga, healing arts, organic gardening focused on healthy eating and bee-keeping, peer to peer mentoring, and equine-assisted psychotherapy.

The The Big Red Barn Retreat has been asked by a renowned national organization (Boulder Crest Retreat of Virginia) to offer the Warrior PATHH (Progressive and Alternative Training for Healing Heroes) program beginning in 2020. Warrior PATHH is the nation’s first non-clinical program designed to cultivate and facilitate Post-traumatic Growth among those struggling with PTSD and/or combat stress.
