Oconee County Council Appoints Stewart Jones as Next County Administrator
December 20, 2025The Oconee County Council has appointed Stewart Jones as the county’s next County Administrator, a decision council leaders say reflects both the values of the community and their expectations for effective local government leadership.
According to Council member Matthew Durham, the appointment underscores Oconee County’s commitment to limited government, fiscal responsibility, local control, and respect for the county’s way of life. Residents elect representatives to set policy, Durham noted, and expect county administration to carry out that policy faithfully, competently, and with accountability.
Jones brings extensive experience in local government, having previously served at the county level in Laurens County. In that role, he worked directly with elected officials and residents, gaining firsthand experience in balancing budgets, making difficult decisions, and remaining accountable to voters.
In addition to his public-sector background, Jones has private-sector business experience leading organizations and building companies, providing him with a strong understanding of budgets, operations, and organizational accountability.
Jones also served at the state level as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he worked closely with counties across the state. His legislative experience gave him insight into how state agencies, regulations, and funding decisions affect local communities, as well as how to advocate effectively for local interests when challenges arise.
County leaders emphasized that this experience is particularly important as Oconee County continues to grow—bringing increased pressure on infrastructure, services, and local resources, along with outside interests that may not always align with community priorities.
The Oconee County Council expressed confidence that Jones is prepared to lead county administration in a manner consistent with the values of the community. His contract will officially begin January 5.
