One Million Cups Columbia hosts Capital Angels and ComCloud

COLUMBIA, SC – Charlie Banks presented on behalf of Capital Angels, a professionally-managed, membership-based group of angel investors in the Midlands. “We invest in innovative startups that have the potential to disrupt and transform markets. We are not an investment fund, but rather a network of investors who make individual investment decisions after working together to evaluate candidate companies,” said Banks.
Banks educated the group on the process an entrepreneur would go through to receive funding, and shared two recent success stories that highlighted the importance of early-stage capital investment.
Next was Hal Turner, a serial entrepreneur and investor, who pitched ComCloud. ComCloud delivers enterprise-level cloud services on a white-labeled platform to Managed Service Providers and IT Service Providers. “For the customers of local IT service providers,” said Turner, “we reduce by 50% the cost for telecom, computing, and applications services.”
Part of Turner’s presentation touched on the need for more growth-stage funding and his experience with raising institutional capital. A lively conversation ensued about the need for more angel investors and venture capital in South Carolina, specifically in the Midlands. Turner noted, “sometimes an idea can be great, but when launched in an environment that lacks all the entrepreneurial ingredients, it can be tough to scale.”
