Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. donates $2,500 to Edisto Habitat for Humanity
April 8, 2026
Edisto Habitat for Humanity accepted a $2,500 donation from the Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. during their 2026 Day of Service, held in honor of Past National President, Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey.
Members of the organization spent the day volunteering alongside Habitat staff and the future homeowner at the site of Edisto Habitat’s 100th home, a milestone home build for the organization and the family it will serve.
“It was truly the Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter’s pleasure to serve alongside the Edisto Habitat for Humanity team and its 100th family partner as we came together to build a home for a deserving family. It meant so much to our chapter to honor Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey during Women’s History Month, which our Sorority recognizes as sisterhood month, while directly supporting our community through Edisto Habitat’s mission to provide safe and affordable housing opportunities for our area’s families,” said Tessie Washington-Haywood, Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s President.
“As members of the Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter, it’s a sensational feeling to work alongside the 100th family on her path to homeownership and the incredible opportunities that she and her children will have,” Haywood continued.
Edisto Habitat officials said they were honored to have the Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority by both the financial contribution and the group’s continued commitment to hands-on service and long-standing partnership. The Orangeburg Chapter of Delta Theta Sigma Alumni has supported the organization for decades, including sponsorship of its annual Women Build, spaghetti fundraiser and other initiatives that advance affordable housing in the region.
“It was a pleasure to have our friends from the Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority spend their Day of Service working on the 100th home with our team and family partner,” said Executive Director Jessica Burgoyne. “Edisto Habitat’s programs survive on donations as well as in-kind building materials. With the continuous exponential rise in costs, these partnerships are more important than ever for us to maintain the services and programs we provide in Orangeburg and the surrounding areas.”
The Sorority’s Day of Service comes on the heels of Edisto Habitat’s recent groundbreaking of its 100th Home Block, a development that will include homes 100 through 106. The organization is currently seeking sponsors and community partners to support construction of the site and sustain its broader programming.
In addition to new home construction, Edisto Habitat provides a range of services to strengthen communities, including but not limited to its Brush with Kindness ramp program, ongoing disaster relief and recovery efforts, financial literacy programs, job skills and workforce opportunities, and its continuous advocacy work at the local, state, and federal levels to advance access to affordable housing.
Edisto Habitat officials said community investment remains critical as the organization works to meet growing demand and rising costs while continuing its mission to ensure everyone has a safe, healthy place to call home.
