Pathways to Careers Expo

October 20, 2016

What do you want to be when you grow up? That’s a question school age children are often asked over, and over again. Often many are still undecided in high school and even after graduation. The district is hosting the Pathways to Careers Expo to help students gain more insight into specific careers on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2), located at 763 Fashion Drive, Columbia SC. The expo will focus on five career clusters that are identified areas of interest for students. Those clusters and the high school presenting the information are as follows:

  • Arts and Audio/Video Communications —Richland Northeast High School
  • Business and Information Technology — Blythewood High School
  • Health Sciences — Ridge View High School
  • Human Services/Education — Westwood High School
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) — Spring Valley High School

The expo is open to all seventh through 12th grade students, parents, and guardians. Richland Two Career Development and Outreach Officer, Maria Owens says they are trying to offer a very different experience from the typical college or career fair.

“Our ultimate goal is to expose students and parents to local business or industry while helping them to understand the connection between what is being learned and offered at the high school level and the opportunities and expectations in their post-high school endeavors,” said Owens.

Students and parents will follow an education path from kindergarten through 12th grade to higher education and then to a career in a particular cluster. Professionals and representatives in each of the career clusters will be on-hand to discuss their industry and jobs.
