Plans unveiled for Tiger Band Plaza

October 12, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – October 12, 2011 – Clemson University Tiger Band Association (CUTBA) has unveiled plans for a Tiger Band Plaza to be built on the band practice field on Perimeter Road.

“The plaza will provide a special place for our band members and their parents to assemble, and it will be an excellent recruiting tool for prospective band students,” said Mark Spede, Clemson band director. “It will be both a functional structure and a chronological monument to Tiger Band — and a beautiful addition to the campus.”

Spede said fundraising for the project is under way. This project is part of Clemson’s The Will to Lead capital campaign to raise $600 million to support students and faculty with scholarships, professorships, facilities, technology and enhanced opportunities for learning and research.

“We see the plaza as a vehicle for all Tiger Band members to be a part of the university forever,” Spede said. “They can have their name, instrument and class year recorded in plaza bricks as a permanent testament of their time in the band.”

CUTBA President Ed Evans said the group is especially proud the plaza project will help students directly.

“As the plaza contributions — both the major gifts and the brick purchases — come in, the funds raised above the cost of the project will flow into a special endowment for Tiger Band scholarships,” he said.

Evans said the plaza will be a place every Tiger Band member — past, present and future — can visit and enjoy.

“The plaza will be a tribute to our efforts as the ‘Guardians of the Clemson Spirit’ and ‘The Band That Shakes The Southland,’” he said.
