Polar Bear Plunge set for January 16 in Lake Carolina

January 11, 2021

As 2021 begins, the Lake Carolina community is once again taking a plunge to help children. Children’s Charities of the Midlands, a charitable organization created in Lake Carolina, was founded in 2000 to generate support for nonprofits benefitting children in the Midlands.

Children’s Charities hosts three annual fundraising events. The first of 2021 will be its annual Polar Bear Plunge on January 16. Community members meet at Sunset Park Dock and plunge into the lake to show their unwavering support for children and their community.

Since his family moved to Lake Carolina in 2011, Gary Matthews has organized his own team for the plunge called the ChippenWhales.

“We raised $45,500 last year through our gofundme page, which goes to Children’s Charities of the Midlands,” he said. “The amount continues to grow each year, and we saw a 50% increase just last year.”

Proceeds raised from the event will benefit Family Connection of South Carolina, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Limitless Purpose, Rising Champions of Prisma Children’s Hospital, the Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment and VitalitySC.
