Explore the Northern Lights in 4K inside the museum’s 55ft digital dome planetarium

The South Carolina State Museum announced the return of the acclaimed planetarium show, “Áróra” opening Saturday, November 2nd. Produced in Iceland, this captivating experience invites guests to witness the mystical colors of the aurora borealis in stunning 4K resolution, while journeying through remote Icelandic landscapes and into the cosmos.

Having sold over 10,000 tickets during its initial run, “Áróra” has proven to be one of the museum’s most popular planetarium attractions. The immersive cinematic journey takes place inside the museum’s 55-foot digital dome planetarium, offering a unique glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights, rarely visible in South Carolina.

“We had a surprising opportunity to see the aurora in South Carolina last spring,” says Dr. Liz Klimek, Planetarium Manager at the State Museum. “The return of this show creates a special chance to revisit that experience and explore the origins of the Northern Lights.”

“Áróra” also examines how various cultures have interpreted the Northern Lights, weaving them into their folktales and mythology. Guests will enjoy a mesmerizing dance of these ethereal lights over Iceland’s winter skies, all from the comfort of the State Museum during this holiday season.

General admission to the South Carolina State Museum is $13 for adults, $11 for seniors, and kids aged 3-12 are $10. Infants 2 and under are free. Tickets to planetarium experiences and 4D shows are an additional charge. The museum is open Tues. – Sat. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sun. from Noon – 5 p.m.
