Post storm update, FEMA info

CHARLESTON, SC

• We are experiencing minor and intermittent flooding downtown in low lying areas which are typically affected by higher tides.
• Charleston Public Safety resources will continue to monitor road conditions. Information will be posted on Twitter, the City of Charleston Facebook page and website.
• The City is in day two of the recovery process. City damage assessment teams have completed windshield surveys of about 30% of the neighborhoods and initial damage assessments of 99 structures. The information that is being gathered is being used to identify areas that are most affected and where resources are needed most. To assist the city in cataloging the extent of damage within the City of Charleston, please report any damage to your home, business or public infrastructure to 843-619-6130. This number will be manned everyday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• If you were impacted by flooding, FEMA may be able to help you with flood-related costs. Visit www.disasterassistance.gov or call800-621-3362 to apply for aid. If you use TTY, call 800-462-7585.
• Garbage will be collected on schedule. Trash (yard waste) collection will be delayed one day. Garbage, trash and household debris generated from the flood should be placed separately behind the curb or at the edge of the street. Debris generated from the flood is expected to be heavy in some areas and the city is working to augment its waste collection operation with an on-call contractor. Damage assessment teams are identifying areas where debris needs to be collected. Once available, a schedule will be provided.
• The city has assembled a “clean team” to clean streets where the floods have left mud and debris. Please e-mail [email protected] to report a substantial amount of mud build up on any streets in your neighborhood.
• Sand bags are available to residents at 2150 Milford Street and Charleston Fire Department Station 19 (1195 Bees Ferry Road).
