It may only be April, but as temperatures climb into the upper 80s it’s hard not to jump into summer styles.

Since we are on track for a prolonged period of warm weather, here are some of the hottest items to consider adding to your wardrobe this year:

1.    Bold, vivid prints. One hallmark of summer is color, and this year’s interpretation comes in the form of prints. Whether it’s a full-print shirt, dress or skirt you can’t go wrong adding some graphic elements to your wardrobe. Whether you choose to pair them with a classic solid or complementary print is completely up to you.

2.    Denim jackets. We’ve all had one, or ten of these over the years, and this summer it’s time to pull one out or pick up a new one. Denim jackets, like jeans, are one of the most versatile pieces created because not only can it be worn casually with shorts and a t-shirt, it just as easily transforms a more formal piece into an everyday one. Additionally it’s the perfect year round item because you can layer it under heavier jackets, as the weather turns cool again.

3.    Simple white sneakers. This trend is still going strong, and probably going to last awhile, so if you haven’t picked up your pair of simple, low-top, white sneakers just bite the bullet. Trust me they will quickly become a go-to favorite when you need something more substantial than a sandal but still casual.

4.    Voluminous fits. Pleats and oversized, draped tops are actually perfect for our summers, because they are literally cool to wear. When it’s sunny and hot outside the last thing most of us want is anything tight, body conscious or even fitted. If you’re not ready for a full on kaftan these pieces will keep you just as cool and free flowing.

5.    A statement backpack. Every year there is an ‘it bag’ and this year it’s the backpack. Utilitarian, practical and available in a range of styles; these hands-free bags are not like the JanSport ones you carried in school. Whether your statement is refined and classic or overly embellished, you can find just about every option in every price range now.

Now that our spring is on its way to early summer, or definitely warmer temperatures, it’s time to start building your summer wardrobe. Fortunately there is enough variety in this year’s trends to fit every style persuasion. Just remember, you don’t have to subscribe to every trend to be trendy. One or two is plenty.
