Georgetown County’s new Detention Center continues to be on schedule and within budget, with a target open date of March 2027, according to information released by the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver and County Administrator Angela Christian joined several members of Georgetown County Council on a recent tour of the facility being built on Browns Ferry Road. The new facility will replace the current detention center, which was built in 1996.

In a recent meeting with Sheriff Weaver, he shared that the new facility is being built with the future in mind. “Not only will it provide more space, accommodating 250 inmates in contrast to the 130-person capacity at the existing facility, the campus will feature improved security and updated technology, making it safer for both county staff and the inmates,” Weaver explained. It also features modernized healthcare infrastructure with drug detoxification protocol provided by contracted medical staff.

“The construction of this new detention center is about safety, accountability, and responsibility to our community,” Sheriff Weaver added. “It will provide a more secure environment for staff and inmates while ensuring we meet modern standards and use taxpayer dollars efficiently.”

The new detention center campus will also include separate buildings for a regional law enforcement training center, 911 operations, a new emergency operations center, the Coroner’s Office as well as the Sheriff’s Reentry Program, which provides inmates with training and skills to help them transition back into society.
