- Public Feedback Drives Design of Wheelsports Park
“The Bend” concept receives positive feedback from project supporters.
After two well-attended community input meetings and more than 20,000 online survey responses, concepts for the Wheelsports Park are starting to take shape.
Calin Owens, the City’s project manager, presented an update to Greenville City Council during a work session, discussing responses from recent community meetings about the Wheelsports Park project.
“The second public meeting allowed people to reflect on three dramatically different concepts,” said Calin Owens, capital projects manager for the City of Greenville. “The intent of that was to get parts and pieces of each concept that everybody liked, and the thought was that it was going to represent a completely new concept that was hybridized, but actually, we heard loud and clear that people were super excited about one of the options that we presented.”
Of the design options presented, “The Bend” received the most positive public feedback. This “L-shape” design separates the skate park and bike playground, includes parking along Airport Road, shaded gathering areas, a small central space next to a pavilion and green space distributed throughout.
“We want to make sure that people know that their voice is being heard and that the input that they give to us impacts the design and what we end up finalizing and eventually constructing,” said Owens. “I think that it’s good that people are putting a lot of trust in us at the city and the design team.”
With community feedback being key to shaping the project’s direction, consultants are encouraging people to continue sharing their ideas. The final community input meeting is set for Dec. 9.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and open in 2028. Learn more about the project at greenvillesc.gov/wheelsports.
