Quackenbush Architects + Planners announces new intern

May 19, 2021

Quackenbush Architects + Planners is pleased to announce and welcome William Scott as a summer intern in its office. Scott completed his junior year at Clemson University where he is majoring in Architecture with a minor in Sustainability.

It’s the sustainability and community-focused element that drew him to Quackenbush, he says. “I’m excited to be here. Quackenbush is a close-knit team dedicated to building healthy and special environments in South Carolina. Establishing my presence at a firm where I know everyone’s name and they know mine is very important to me.”

Born and raised in Clinton, South Carolina, Scott is most interested in how architecture can be used to promote social justice and equity to improve the quality of life for a community’s most vulnerable individuals as well as to help reduce the world’s carbon imprint.

He says he was drawn to the field when he saw Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao’s Affordable Housing Project, a low-cost house design that can be easily adapted to a growing family and altered using different materials and spatial layouts to suit the country’s diverse regional climates. “The changing climate is a major issue that more architects will need to consider in their designs,” he says.

He also lauds opportunities offered by The Clemson Architecture Center in Barcelona, which he participated in via Zoom the past school year. “It was fascinating to learn from the architects there—Barcelona’s history, its grid, and the city’s ‘green’ features that encourage people to bike and walk.”

“We’re happy to welcome William this summer,” says Quackenbush Architects + Planners President Doug Quackenbush. “We like his vision of wanting to create the kind of personal and professional spaces that help communities thrive.”
