Quackenbush Architects + Planners receives AIA South Carolina Citation Award in new construction
November 6, 2024Quackenbush Architects + Planners recently received a 2024 American Institute of Architects South Carolina Citation Award for their work on the new classroom addition at Carver-Lyon Elementary School in Richland School District One.
The school, located in a diverse urban neighborhood, holds a rich history within the local community. The new 21,000-square-foot classroom addition, which opened in January 2023, increases the school’s capacity to accommodate a district-wide language immersion magnet program. It was designed specifically to support the school’s pedagogy of collaboration and flexible learning environments.
Design award jury chairs Heidi Beebe and Doug Skidmore announced the award and shared the jurors’ comments at AIASC’s annual design awards ceremony. Jurors praised the school’s design for its clear layout, abundant perimeter lighting, and a sense of “airiness.” They also commended the project’s integration with the existing campus and the use of the addition’s massing to create functional, shaded outdoor areas.
The annual awards ceremony, themed “Textiles & Tuxedos,” was held in Greenville, SC, on October 25, 2024. The program celebrates outstanding design, recognizing projects, architects, and owners in the region who embody vision, creativity, and innovation in architecture.
