Quackenbush Architects’ Spencer Hutchinson selected to serve on AIA Greater Columbia Board

Spencer Hutchinson, project architect at Quackenbush Architects + Planners, was recently appointed to the board of the Greater Columbia chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
A licensed architect since 2017 and a member of AIA Greater Columbia for three years, Hutchinson is enthusiastic about helping the organization support the professional growth of Columbia architects and to engage with the community to create thriving spaces to live, learn, work and play.
“AIA Greater Columbia not only focuses on resources and support for architects, but on efforts to help us stay in touch with the people we’re designing for,” he says. “It’s exciting to be able to contribute to these discussions.”
The AIA chapter meets monthly and hosts building tours as well as social and professional gatherings, including the popular AIA Columbia Design Awards, a biannual event that recognizes some of the most innovative projects completed by Columbia firms.
“I appreciate the opportunity AIA Columbia provides to interact with other architects and catch up with other professionals,” says Hutchinson. “It’s a collaborative group. We’re all working to make the city better and put our creative energy into high-quality designs. The design awards competition, in particular, is an opportunity to get to see a lot of the great work going on here in Columbia.”
Hutchinson, who joined Q+ in 2016, is one of three new AIA Greater Columbia board members. Among his most recent Q+ projects is the soon-to-be-dedicated 100,000-square-foot University of South Carolina Long Family Football Operations Center. A 2016 graduate of Clemson University Master of Architecture program, Hutchinson is also leading the design team developing a Culinary Arts lab and classroom at the Heyward Career & Technology Center.
