LWP 2015 programs to focus on how to teach reading and writing skills
CHARLESTON, SC – The Lowcountry Writing Project (LWP), is accepting applications for its 2015 spring course, “Young Adult Literature.” The LWP is one of more than 200 sites around America of the National Writing Project, offering professional development to help teachers teach writing skills more effectively in their classrooms. The LWP is hosted by the English Department at The Citadel and relies on successful practicing teachers – rather than outside experts – to facilitate the courses.
The Young Adult Literature (YA Lit) course is for middle and high school teachers who want to become more familiar with new and recent YA books and with concepts for incorporating those books into the classroom. The three-graduate-hour course will introduce participants to student-friendly texts that can complement traditional texts, with a special focus on historical fiction. The course was specifically designed for English and social studies teachers and librarians, but can also be useful for teachers in other academic disciplines.
“The YA Lit class gave me new strategies for incorporating current literature into my content areas and allowed me the opportunity to explore new authors, getting a fresh look on today’s literature,” said Ashlee Newton, Charleston County School District teacher.
The classes meet on Tuesdays from 5 – 8 p.m., Jan. 13 through April 21 at The Citadel.
The cost is $300. Applications are due January 9, and are available online at www.citadel.edu/writingproject.
“Literature is magical. Dr. Thompson’s young adult literature course opens the door for the magic to emerge,” said Laura Saunders, Ph.D., literacy teacher-researcher for the Charleston County School District.
Spring Conference
The LWP Spring Conference is scheduled for March 7, 2015 at Moultrie Middle School in Mt. Pleasant. The conference is a professional development opportunity for all Lowcountry teachers from public and private schools, all grade levels and all disciplines. Hosted by LWP Teacher Consultants, the conference will offer four one-hour sessions on a variety of topics related to the teaching of writing in the classroom. The cost is $30. Online registration will begin in January at www.citadel.edu/writingproject.
Summer Institute 2015
The Invitational Summer Institute brings together teachers from across the Lowcountry, in all grade levels and all disciplines, for four weeks of reading, writing, research, and practice. Participants are invited on the basis of an application and a personal interview and earn six hours of graduate credit. A grant covers the cost of tuition and books. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2015 Institute, which runs from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, from June 8 through
July 2.
Young Writers Camp 2015
The 2015 Young Writers Camp is scheduled for June 15 − 25 and will be held at The Citadel Mondays through Thursdays. The two-week program is designed for students from third to eighth grades who want to improve their writing skills. Guest authors will conduct writing workshops and guest teachers infuse writing into fun activities. Applications will be accepted beginning in January on the LWP website.
