Richland Library offers life skills course at Alvin S. Glenn

August 10, 2016
Impacting the lives of more than 50 male detainees, Richland Library has partnered with the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center since January 2016 to provide Self Sufficiency 101.

The six-week course receives funding with a $30,000 Library Services Technology Act grant through the South Carolina State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It encompasses 11 sessions that cover a wide-range of topics, including:

  • Goal setting
  • Literacy
  • Fatherhood
  • Community Resources
  • Jobs Skills
  • Finances

In addition to these sessions, Richland Library also offers access to research materials and individualized counseling on goal setting to each participant.

“It truly gives hope to a person that is incarcerated and feels they have no other options but the things that got them arrested,” said an unidentified detainee.

Richland Library is going to expand the course to the Department of Juvenile Justice and women at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center this fall.
