Richland Two partners with Midlands Technical College to offer students EMT course

Richland School District Two and Midlands Technical College have partnered to offer district high school seniors essential training on the path to becoming emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The course will be offered as part of MEDTwo, the district’s after-school extension program that provides healthcare related opportunities for middle and high school students.
The EMT Basic course will begin in January. The class prepares students to take the National Registry exam required for certification. EMTs, also known as first responders, work in a variety of settings, including county emergency services departments, private ambulance and transport companies, and hospitals. They are in demand with starting salaries of $32,000 or more.
“This boot camp is an example of how we’re preparing students to graduate high school quipped to excel on their chosen pathway,” said District Superintendent Dr. Baron R. Davis. “This certification will allow graduates to support themselves and will hopefully propel them to elevated positions such as paramedic, nurse and beyond.”
EMTs care for the sick or injured in emergency medical settings, and people’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care provided by these workers. EMTs respond to emergency calls, perform medical services and transport patients to medical facilities.
“The power of a partnership like this one with Richland Two is that it creates pathways for students into a career though industry recognized training programs,” said Micah A. Norman, Health Care Program Director for Midlands Technical College’s Corporate and Continuing Education program. “By incorporating this training at the high school level, students have an opportunity to graduate with an industry recognized credential in addition to their high school diploma.”
MED Two opportunities may include career exploration, education exploration, healthcare seminars, field studies and/or skills certification. MED Two is one component of Richland Two’s multi-faceted healthcare related offerings.
