Ridge View High School’s Institute for Health Sciences Magnet Program named National Magnet School of Distinction

COLUMBIA – Ridge View High School’s Institute for Health Sciences has been named a National Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. The Institute for Health Sciences engages students in a challenging and competitive educational environment through a comprehensive course of study in science, mathematics, technology, literacy and other areas as they apply to the needs of our global society. The Institute for Health Sciences offers highly-achieving honors or college prep students a dynamic, rigorous curriculum.

Magnet seminar courses, based on the nationally recognized Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Biomedical Sciences program, uses real-world and hands-on learning experiences. IHS students pursue careers ranging from biomedical engineers to doctors, nurses, nutritionists and physical therapists.

Jennifer McLeod will be recognized and receive a National Magnet School of Distinction Merit Award on behalf of the school during an awards ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 34th National Conference hosted by Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Miami, Florida May 3-7, 2016.

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme. The Executive Director of Magnet Schools of America, Todd Mann and President, Doreen Marvin will present the award on Thursday, May 5, 2016.
