Roper St. Francis Healthcare provides free high school sports physicals

Sports Medicine professionals volunteering time, expertise for high school students

Teams of Roper St. Francis Healthcare physicians, physical therapists and athletic trainers are volunteering their time and skills to help hundreds of public and private high school athletes from Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare is supporting local high school sports by hosting 16 free sports health clinics at high schools around the Lowcountry.

The clinics, which launched April 20 and will last six weeks, help identify a variety of conditions in students such as elevated blood pressure, vision problems and heart murmurs. Doctors also identify orthopedic issues that sports trainers can work on during sports seasons.

The clinics have been particularly useful in recent years as Roper St. Francis Healthcare caregivers have provided advice on nutrition and weight management. During past events, RSFH has found about 33 percent of athletes to be overweight or obese.

Students are able to sign up for the sports health clinics through athletic trainers at their schools or by going online.
