COLUMBIA, SC – Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College will gather the community for an afternoon of friends, family and music this Sunday, October 18, 2015, at 3:30 p.m., when the South Carolina Philharmonic gives a concert devoted to the enjoyment of the uniquely American voice, The Great American Songbook.

The Great American Songbook is a compilation of America’s most influential songs of the 20th century by critic and songwriter Alec Wilder. The collection includes songs from Broadway musicals, Hollywood films and more from the years 1920-50.

Conductor Morihiko Nakahara will lead the orchestra in arrangements from The Great American Songbook, including the following:

• Ian Polster’s “That’s Entertainment”
• George Gershwin/Don Rose’s Overture to “Girl Crazy”
• Cole Porter/Lewis’ “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”
• Duke Ellington/Hermann’s “Duke Ellington Fantasy”
• George Gershwin/Marty Gold’s “The Man I Love”
• Johnny Mandel/Lewis’ “The Shadow of Your Smile”
• Walter Donaldson/Goodwin’s “Carolina in the Morning”

“Many of these songs were written during difficult times in our country’s history, with the intention of lightening the mood and returning some smiles to tired faces,” says Katie Fox, Executive Director at Harbison Theatre. “We’re grateful for the chance to share those songs with a community that’s currently showing tremendous strength.”

The Great American Songbook is the first installment of three concerts in Harbison Theatre’s crowd-favorite Pops Series. The other shows in The Pops Series are the sold-out Holiday Pops on Dec. 13, 2015 and the nearly sold-out Sci-Fi in Hi-Fi on April 23, 2016.

The Great American Songbook is presented in part by Capital City Lake Murray Country. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.harbisontheatre.org/tickets-productions/great-american-songbook.
