July 24, 2025

Sam Johnson, a lifelong Columbian and dedicated public servant, has officially announced his candidacy for an at-large seat on Columbia City Council.

Raised in Columbia by a truck driver and an Alzheimer’s nurse, Sam Johnson credits his parents’ work ethic and sacrifices as the foundation for his deep commitment to public service. His career has included key roles in the Mayor’s Office and leadership in transformative projects that have helped bring more than $1 billion in economic investment to the city. His work includes spearheading initiatives such as My Brother’s Keeper Columbia, the Famously Hot New Year celebration, and the BullStreet redevelopment. He currently serves as CEO of Civint, a national firm that partners with communities to navigate local government and drive policy innovation.

After graduating from Spring Valley High School, Johnson went on to study at the University of South Carolina and work for SC Representative Anton Gunn before joining Steve Benjamin’s landmark 2009 campaign for Mayor of Columbia.

“Columbia is home,” Johnson said. “And I’m stepping up to serve in a new way—because I believe we can build a city where every neighborhood thrives, every voice is heard, and every family has a fair shot.”

With a platform centered on equitable growth, inclusive leadership, and bold, community-centered action, Johnson is inviting residents from every corner of the city to join a movement committed to real progress. His campaign promises to focus on leadership, listening, and action to create a stronger, more connected Columbia for all.
