Santee Cooper names Shawan Gillians Director of Sustainability and Associate General Counsel

Santee Cooper has named Shawan Gillians Director of Sustainability and Associate General Counsel, effective Jan. 23, 2023. In her new position, Gillians will serve to enhance the utility’s efforts in sustainability through the development of a comprehensive corporate strategy and support structure.

Since 2011, Gillians has held several positions with Santee Cooper including Attorney, Associate General Counsel, Treasurer, and Director of Legal Services and Corporate Secretary. Prior to joining Santee Cooper, she was in private practice with Buist Moore Smythe McGee. She serves on the Nominating Committee for the South Carolina Bar Association and chairs the South Carolina Supreme Court Commission on Continuing Legal Education.

Gillians received her Bachelor of Arts in economics and religion from Wofford College in 2004 (and currently serves on the Wofford Board of Trustees), a juris doctor from The College of William and Mary in 2007, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 2016. Among her many other civic activities, Gillians serves on the boards for the Coastal Community Foundation, Trident United Way, Roper St. Francis Hospital/Berkeley Hospital, and the Historic Charleston Foundation.
