SC BlueCross Wants You to ‘Show Us Your Shoefie’
April 8, 2015COLUMBIA, SC – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is launching this year’s LiveLifeBlueSM photo contest with a challenge to South Carolina residents to submit a “shoefie” illustrating the foot attire that helps them get moving every day.
The winner, to be chosen randomly, will receive a Fitbit Charge. Deadline for entry is April 24.
The contest is open to any South Carolina resident, age 18 or older. There are three ways to submit: upload to the entrant’s personal Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account using #livelifebluesc, upload directly to the LiveLifeBlue contest on Facebook, or email to [email protected].
“We want to see everyone on their feet and moving. Whether you’re running a 5K or shuffling through the halls at work — it’s important to get your steps in each day. Take our wellness challenge and capture the action with a picture,” said Shawn Stinson, M.D., vice president of clinical innovation and chief medical officer.
The U.S. Surgeon General has recommended that Americans accumulate 30 minutes of activity most days of the week. This is roughly equivalent to taking 10,000 steps in a day, which can help reduce the risk of chronic disease. Building aerobic fitness requires 3,000 steps a day, and sustained weight loss requires 12,000-15,000 steps a day.
The LiveLifeBlue program, which includes a component in which businesses compete to have the best workplace wellness programs, is part of BlueCross’ efforts to engage individuals to take more responsibility for their health. The national Triple Aim of better care for individuals, better overall population health and lower costs of care includes as one of its goals a focus on individuals and families.
The April LiveLifeBlue theme fits with the annual National Walk@Lunch Day® hosted by BlueCross companies nationwide. In South Carolina, BlueCross challenges its group accounts to plan a lunch time walk for their employees during the last week of April and the company hosts community walks. This year those walks are scheduled in Columbia on April 29 and in Charleston and Greenville on May 1.
