SC Human Affairs Commission commemorates Mother Emanuel Nine
May 21, 2018Lead prosecutor in Dylann Roof Trial is Keynote Speaker
The South Carolina Human Affairs Commission will commemorate Mother Emanuel Nine Day Remembrance on June 1, 2018, to honor the victims of the tragic incident that is forever etched in many South Carolinian’s memory. Each year, the Commission invites the community to remember the impact Mother Emanuel victims made on society and reflect on the progress made in improving race relations and economic equality for all South Carolinians. This year’s commemoration will be held on June 1 at 11:00 am in Chappelle Auditorium on the campus of Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina.
United States Assistant Attorney Julius “Jay” Richardson will be the guest speaker. The event will be hosted by Allen University, and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary will offer prayers of peace. Allen University lost three alumni, Reverend Clementa Pinckney, Reverend Daniel Simmons and Tywanza
Sanders, from this massacre and both Reverends were also affiliated with the Theological Seminary.
Jay Richardson served as the lead prosecutor onUnited States v. Dylann Storm Roof, where the jury
convicted and sentenced Roof to death for his actions. Richardson is currently the Deputy Criminal Chief of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina, having focused on prosecuting violent crime, gangs, terrorism, public corruption, civil rights, and narcotics trafficking. He handled complex civil litigation for three years as an associate with the Washington, D.C., firm of Kellogg Hansen and served as a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the Supreme Court of the United States and Judge Richard A. Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit before entering private practice.
