SC Lions Partner With WLTX-TV, WCSC-TV and Local Businesses to Provide Almost 500 Free Health Screenings in Two Days in Columbia and Charleston

October 21, 2014

CHARLESTON, SC – As part of their on-going initiative to promote vision and hearing wellness and to celebrate World Sight Day, South Carolina’s Lions Charitable Services partnered with WLTX-TV and WCSC-TV to provide free vision, hearing, glaucoma, height/weight/BMI and other health screenings on October 7th in Charleston and October 9th in Columbia.  The Charleston event, held across the street from the WCSC studios at the Lowe’s store on Glenn McConnell Parkway, provided 223 free screenings to low and moderate income individuals.  Each screening provided was worth $70 per person and helped saved the Lowcountry Healthcare System $15,610 in one day.

The Columbia event, held at WLTX’s studios on Garners Ferry Road served 241 individuals during the twelve hour service day.  In addition to the vision, hearing, glaucoma, and height/weight/BMI screenings provided in Charleston, the Columbia event also provided free flu shots and chair massages for participants.  A phone bank also answered questions and made referrals to those in need of additional services.  Services provided at this site totaled a one day savings to the Richland County Healthcare System of $16,870.  Together, both sites saved SC Taxpayers $32,480 in free health services.

“We are thrilled to once again be partnering with WLTX and to welcome WCSC as our new partner for these wonderful events,” said Dr. Louis Drucker, Board Chair of SC Lions Charitable Services.  “We’d also like to thank our other partners, including local Lions Clubs, Gregory Electric, Enterprise Holdings, The Balance Institute, Midlands Technical College School of Nursing, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, and SC Outdoor Advertising Association.  Together, we have made a great impact on the health of those in need of health services and look forward to doing this again next year.”
