SC7 Expedition Highlights Laurens County’s Natural Beauty and Conservation Efforts

July 16, 2025

The SC7 Expedition returned to Laurens County on Thursday, July 10, for Day 10 of its month-long journey across South Carolina, bringing with it a renewed focus on conservation, environmental stewardship, and the beauty of the state’s natural resources.

Hosted in partnership with Laurens County Parks & Recreation and the Laurens Trails Association, the day’s hike took participants along the Enoree Passage of the Palmetto Trail. This scenic stretch of trail features hardwood forests, creek crossings, and a variety of natural landscapes that underscore the importance of preserving green spaces and promoting outdoor recreation in Laurens County.

The SC7 Expedition is an annual initiative spearheaded by the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor in collaboration with Global Eco Adventures. Now in its sixth year, SC7 spans the state from the mountains to the sea, raising awareness of South Carolina’s natural wonders while highlighting issues of conservation, flood resilience, and the impact of climate on local ecosystems.

The Laurens County hike drew members of the community, with local residents, outdoor enthusiasts, and conservation advocates joining together for the day’s activities. Representatives from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SC DNR) were also on hand to share insights into the vital role of pollinators within South Carolina’s ecosystems. Through informal talks and educational materials, SC DNR staff highlighted how bees, butterflies, and other pollinators contribute to biodiversity, agriculture, and the health of native plant species.

“This was a fantastic opportunity not only to showcase the natural beauty we have here in Laurens County but to engage with residents on why protecting these spaces—and the creatures that rely on them—is so important,” said Andy Howard, Director of Laurens County Parks and Recreation. “It’s about education, connection, and stewardship.”

SC7 organizers noted that local events like this are key to their mission of connecting people with the environment in meaningful ways. By highlighting trails like the Enoree Passage, the expedition helps raise awareness about the importance of trail development, conservation efforts, and the growing outdoor tourism industry in areas like Laurens County.

As SC7 moves forward toward the Midlands and Lowcountry, the expedition will continue to spotlight conservation, resilience, and community engagement through hikes, paddles, and special events aimed at inspiring a love of the outdoors and a commitment to protecting South Carolina’s natural resources.
