SCDOT’s spring spruce up litter collection results

Thousands of South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Maintenance workers and volunteers from various SCDOT offices spent Thursday March 22 collecting litter on highways in every county of the state.
Those efforts resulted in the collection of over 20,000 (20,170) bags of litter. Those bags, plus items that were too large to fit in bags filled over 100 dump trucks.
Secretary of Transportation Christy Hall said Thursday’s Spring Spruce Up should not be considered a one day event. “We would ask the public to help us keep the newly-cleaned highways litter-free. We see Thursday’s clean-up as a call-to-action,” she said. Hall added that littering is a personal responsibility for every South Carolinian. She urges that all motorists “stash their trash” until reaching their destination where it can be disposed of properly.
SCDOT encourages all motorists to use the “Litter Busters Hotline:” 877-7LITTER. This number can be used to report someone tossing litter from their vehicle, or “litter hotspots” where excessive amounts of litter have been dumped or have accumulated.
SCDOT reminds the public that litter hurts everyone in South Carolina. Litter is an eyesore and can hurt our economic development and job creation.
