SCDOT’s public notification of proposed safety improvements along US 176 near Columbia

September 22, 2020

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is providing notification of the Transportation Commission-approved public comment period. The public has the opportunity to comment on an action to amend the 2017-2022 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) to include road safety improvements to US 176 from St. Andrews Road to Atlantic Drive in Columbia. SCDOT will receive public comment for a 21-day period from September 22, 2020 through October 13, 2020.

As a part of this safety project, SCDOT proposes to install concrete medians, consolidate driveways in areas with a high-frequency of angle collisions, install crosswalks and pedestrian signals at signalized intersections to improve pedestrian safety, and upgrade signal equipment, signage, and pavement markings. The project will improve intersection operations and safety along the US 176 corridor. The total estimated cost for this project is $1.5 million.

Pending consideration of public comments, the proposed changes will be recommended for inclusion in a future revision to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program.
