SCE&G presented with Outstanding Achievement and Leadership Award for its solar programs by South Carolina Clean Energy Business Alliance

The South Carolina Clean Energy Business Alliance (SCCEBA) presented South Carolina Electric & Gas Company with its Outstanding Achievement and Leadership Award at the 2017 SC Clean Energy Summit today. SCCEBA is a nonprofit coalition of clean energy leaders and supporters dedicated to advocating sound public policies to create a vibrant clean energy economy in South Carolina. It recognizes organizations and individuals that have made significant contributions toward developing South Carolina’s clean energy economy.
SCCEBA chose to recognize SCE&G for its overall success with implementing solar programs in accordance with the Distributed Energy Resource Program Act of 2014 (Act 236) and for embracing renewable energy as a significant part of its generation portfolio. SCE&G’s Renewable Energy team designed easy-to-understand consumer solar programs that achieved the adoption goals of Act 236, provided consumer friendly information on its website and other communication channels and efficiently managed the interconnection process. As a result, SCE&G has developed a very successful solar program that gives consumers choices and keeps installation costs low by streamlining the interconnection process. The utility has also gained valuable experience with bi-directional energy flow on the grid that will benefit its customers as solar technology continues to evolve.
SCE&G has seamlessly integrated solar energy in its everyday operations and has built the systems and procedures to support greater renewable energy in the future. SCE&G’s solar programs, introduced in the summer of 2015, were well received by customers and as of May 31, 2017 had more than 60 megawatts of installed capacity. In a very short time, SCE&G designed programs for various rate classes, including non-profits, created informative and useful websites, made changes to its billing system and processed thousands of interconnection applications.
SCE&G worked alongside peer utilities and other stakeholders to help develop Act 236, which became South Carolina’s renewable energy policy for the creation of a solar energy marketplace. Energy stakeholders collaborated on policies for valuating solar energy, incentives for the adoption of solar energy and innovative financing alternatives. The overarching goal was to usher in renewable energy as part of a diversified portfolio of generation and to gain valuable experience on which to base future policy decisions.
