April 14, 2009

COLUMBIA, SC – April 14, 2009 – South Carolina students can celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, with a live interactive field trip to be broadcast statewide by SCETV.

The broadcast is scheduled for 1 p.m. as part of the Project Discovery series produced by the State Department of Education’s ITV in conjunction with South Carolina ETV. Famed naturalist Rudy Mancke, host of ETV’s Nature Scene and a professor at the University of South Carolina, will be present for the April 22 special from the banks of the scenic Congaree River.

Students will get a look at a new ETV resource, Web of Water, and will meet the Congaree riverkeeper who works to preserve the waterway for enjoyment by future generations.  The broadcast also features details about the history of the area around West Columbia and the Columbia Canal and looks at kayak making and racing.

The program is designed for viewing by students in grade 2 and above.

Young people across the state are invited to participate by e-mailing their questions before and during the telecast to [email protected].

The Project Discovery Earth Day special will be repeated on April 28 and May 4 from 1 to 2 p.m. on Channel 1 for taping by schools (unlimited rights).
