SCORS invites gubernatorial candidates for rural school discussion
February 28, 2018The South Carolina Organization of Rural Schools (SCORS) has invited the gubernatorial candidates to discuss their plans for rural schools in South Carolina.
Invitations were sent out to all of the gubernatorial candidates. Requests were made to either come themselves, or send a representative. Of the eight candidates, five will be there and one will send a representative. Rural educators, friends of education, legislators, parents and students are encouraged to be at the Discussion.
The discussion will take place on March 1, 2018 from 1:30 to 3:30 at The SCEA offices at 421 Zimalcrest Drive in Columbia.
Since the South Carolina Supreme Court has withdrawn itself from the creation of a new school funding system, the administration and the legislature continue to have that task.
The original case, called Abbeville, had been in the courts for over 20 years. The original 35 plaintiff districts still suffer from a lack of resources. The legislature and the Department of Education have done some repairs to the system. However, much more needs to be done.
The two year old organization, SCORS, has been traveling around the state and has visited 15 of the 35 plaintiff districts. Roger Smith, President of SCORS said, “It is important for us to see firsthand, the needs of our rural schools. Visiting the districts and talking to the folks is the way to do it.”
SCORS is presently creating a sequel to the Corridor of Shame documentary. It will bring the situation in rural schools up to date. It will be called: “Unfinished Business: Children of the Corridor.”
