SeamonWhiteside prepares future graduates with job training

June 19, 2017

Civil engineering firm, SeamonWhiteside, in association with Trident Technical College and Apprenticeship Carolina, have begun a new apprenticeship program to train future college graduates.

Earlier this year, Mitchell Harp, the director of apprenticeship programs for Trident Technical College, approached SW+ principal, Stuart Whiteside, with the idea to take on an apprentice. Through several meetings, SW+ learned how the program works and the positive impact it could have on the office, including the opportunity to work with highly skilled candidates to create a reliable plan for smart growth.

“We saw SeamonWhiteside has a valuable apprenticeship participant because of their strong desire to create pathways of success for their employees, said Harp. “They already successfully build up and train their employees, so allowing an entry level apprentice to partake in this pathway was a natural fit.”

The SW+ Apprenticeship Program is uniquely designed for participants to learn and acquire the skills needed to move into a career after completing the program. Through focused education and supervised on-the-job training, SW+ will provide apprentices the opportunity to train in their desired industry. However, this isn’t a new concept for SW+. For more than 30 years, they’ve been investing in their talent pool early in their employees’ careers.

“I first interned with SW+ before coming on board full-time. I’ve been a product of a very similar track and having the opportunity to intern with the company affirmed my profession preference, and made the transition from university to company life much more smooth,” says Jenny Craig Germuth, civil engineering project coordinator.

SW+ welcomed their first apprentice from Trident Technical College, Brian Titze, to the Mt. Pleasant office in January. A second candidate will join the office this summer. The competency-based program will immerse Brian into civil engineering for the next two to four years. He is on track to complete thousands of hours of training, as well as create a learning log to document his experience.

“My experience thus far at SeamonWhiteside has allowed for practical, on-the-job training and I now feel much more prepared to enter into this industry,” says Brian Titze, civil engineering apprentice

SW+ is currently the only civil engineering firm partnering with Trident Technical College and Apprenticeship Carolina on a program of this kind.
