Secaida Howell Appointed Principal of South Carolina Calvert Academy

BALTIMORE & COLUMBIA, SC – April 16, 2009 – South Carolina Calvert Academy, a Kindergarten through Eighth Grade public virtual charter school, has appointed Dr. Secaida D. Howell as its first Principal. Dr. Howell will lead the school in its mission to help students reach their full academic potential in a 21st Century online learning environment. Additionally, Dr. Howell will hire faculty, open a facility in Columbia, and work with the school’s Governing Board to chart the direction of the new school.

Dr. Howell said, As school administrator for fifteen years, I have worked to reengineer how students are taught and how they learn. South Carolina Calvert Academy offers the best opportunity for what we all know needs to happen in public education in America. Given Calvert’s rich 100 year history, I envision that South Carolina Calvert Academy will, in a very short period of time, become the leader in virtual education in the Palmetto state.

Dr. Howell currently serves as the Superintendent of the Bamberg 2 School District where he was recently commended by State Superintendent of Education, Jim Rex, for restoring over one million dollars in his district’s fund balance from a deficit just two years ago.

Dr. Howell holds a BA in Music Education, a Master of Secondary Education, Masters, Educational Specialist and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Howell has received numerous honors and awards. He was an Oxford University Scholar, Oxford International Roundtable for the Superintendency and Principalship. Additionally, he has authored dozens of education articles which have been published by newspapers and educational journals including the Wall Street Journal.
