Secretary of Transportation Christy Hall announces retirement

After nearly 30 years of service to the State of South Carolina, Christy A. Hall, the Secretary of Transportation for the South Carolina Department of Transportation, announced her retirement effective March 31, 2024. Hall has served as Secretary of Transportation for approximately 10 years since she was appointed by Governor Nikki Haley.
Secretary of Transportation Christy A. Hall, P.E. said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to work alongside the men and women of the S.C. Department of Transportation to serve the people of South Carolina. I am thankful to Governor Haley, Governor McMaster and the SCDOT Commission for the opportunity to serve as the agency head during the past decade when South Carolina has experienced unprecedented levels of road and bridge work in every county of the state. I also want to thank the South Carolina General Assembly for recognizing the need to boost funding for infrastructure and to continuously evaluate those funding levels in order to keep pace with rapidly evolving business, residential and economic development needs.”
Governor Henry McMaster said, “Secretary Hall will be remembered as one of the greatest transportation secretaries in state history. Her unparalleled expertise and relentless work ethic have allowed SCDOT to flourish under her leadership. Whether responding to natural disasters or spearheading transformative infrastructure projects, she has consistently delivered for the people of South Carolina. She leaves a legacy of excellence and has placed the agency in a position to continue to drive our state forward.”
Chairman of the SCDOT Commission Tony Cox said, “Christy Hall has been an unbelievable Secretary for the people of South Carolina. During her tenure, she has more than quadrupled the amount of road and bridge work happening across our state. I join with my fellow Commissioners to thank Secretary Hall for her service to the state of South Carolina and to wish her well in all of her future endeavors.”
Vice-Chairman of the SCDOT Commission Pamela Christopher said, “Secretary Hall is an incredible leader and a force for good in the state of South Carolina. There is no doubt that the agency and the state are better for her service and the strategic plans she has put in motion.”
Hall was recruited to the SCDOT during her final year in the Civil Engineering program at Clemson University. She has served the state continuously since graduating college and was able to serve in a variety of roles including front line experience in design, project management, construction management, and road and bridge maintenance before moving into district and headquarters leadership roles including Deputy Secretary for Finance & Administration, Deputy Secretary for Engineering and Secretary of Transportation.
Highlights of her career with SCDOT include restoring the agency’s finances and financial reputation, developing and leading the strategic 10-year plan, and accelerating critical interstate widening projects. Hall has been recognized for her ability to work with industry partners to deliver results on major infrastructure projects. In addition, she has led the agency through a number of disasters including the floods of 2015, Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence. Under her leadership and in partnership with law enforcement, South Carolina had its first successful coastal evacuation that included reversing traffic along major interstate routes.
Secretary Hall is a South Carolina native, a graduate of Clemson University, and a registered Professional Engineer. Throughout her career she has received numerous awards and recognitions, including an Emmy nomination for her work with SCETV and the state’s highest civilian honor, The Order of the Palmetto. Among her industry recognition, Hall is the recipient of the AGC Build with the Best Award for her leadership during the 2015 floods and the ACEC Service to the Profession Award to honor her significant contributions to the field of engineering.
