Secrets of Entrepreneurship – What we learn from entrepreneurship
June 18, 2016By Jerry Bellune
Entrepreneurs seem to be larger-than-life characters.
They take big risks. They make their own rules.
They innovate, experiment and tinker.
They question what everybody else takes for granted.
Are entrepreneurs really a breed apart?
I don’t think so. Most of them are like you and me.
But they have to have some things others don’t have:
• Determination and an inner drive to succeed.
• Immense curiosity about almost anything.
• A will to explore uncharted territory.
• The nerve to challenge conventional thinking.
• An intuitive sense of what just might work.
All of us have the ability to take risks,
We can think creatively and challenge assumptions.
We should tap those traits in our lives and work.
Don’t let self-limiting beliefs slow you down.
Believe in yourself and your own dreams.
Debbi Fields is a good example of this.
She considers herself just an average person.
She married a brilliant economist.
She felt out of sorts with his equally brilliant friends.
She wanted to do something with her own life.
She loved baking chocolate chip cookies.
Why couldn’t she turn that love into a business?
Then she ran into a massive problem.
Her family and friends didn’t think she could make it.
They discouraged her, tried to talk her out of it.
Even bankers turned her down for a loan.
But Debbi had a childlike faith in her dream.
Her husband finally came around and backed her.
They got a loan, found space to rent in a mall.
The first day she was open, no one came in.
So she loaded a tray with cookies and went walking.
She offered cookies to everyone she encountered.
It worked. Customers started coming in for cookies.
She made $50 the first day, $75 the second.
Now she owns cookie stores here and abroad.
You can learn Debbi’s secrets for your own dreams.
