Sedgefield Middle receives $22,800 grant

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Sedgefield Middle School recently was awarded a $22,800 grant by the Google Data Center Fund and the Tides Foundation to expand student interest in coding, computer science applications, special-interest clubs related to STEM, and to engage students in personalized classroom learning.
“We are so excited to receive this substantial grant,” said Sedgefield Middle School Principal, Shameka Washington. “Having ample access and opportunities for students is essential to their success. To be able to achieve our school’s mission of preparing our students to be highly competitive in the real world, they need to possess exemplary skills in their knowledge and application of technology.”
The school will use the grant funds to implement the Bridging the Digital Divide Program, which will allow teachers to use netbooks to make their classrooms green and allow students to try coding and use interactive websites.
“By receiving this grant, our goals are to increase student engagement and knowledge of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Another goal is to increase participation in special-interest clubs such as Google CS First and Robotics,” said Washington.
