SEED architecture moves to Cottontown
November 27, 2018
SEED Architecture, a full-service architecture and planning firm founded in 2015 by John K. Powell, has moved into new offices that the firm designed at 2144 Sumter St. The firm has also launched a redesigned website at www.SEEDarchitect.com.
SEED was the project architect for the redevelopment of the former Dave’s Transmission property on Sumter Street that was repurposed by Cason Development Group. Joining SEED with new offices in the building are Cason Development Group, No BS Sales School and GrayFox Strategic. Two other buildings that were part of the Dave’s Transmission complex have been repurposed for Citta del Cotone pizzeria, which recently opened, and another potential restaurant.
The move to Cottontown “has been a good fit for us in terms of the character of our space,” Powell said, and will afford the firm “the opportunity to grow.” SEED has been involved in many of the Cottontown projects, starting with the transformation of the Dunn Electric Co. building into Indah Coffee and Circa Barber Shop, for which SEED received a 2018 Preservation Award for Adaptive Reuse from Historic Columbia. “It’s been exciting to be a part of the new growth in Columbia,” Powell said.
Primarily a commercial firm, Seed does most of its work in the greater Columbia region, Charleston, and Greenville and continues to look at projects elsewhere in the state.
Current projects include Blythewood Presbyterian Church in Blythewood, a Diamond Pet Foods manufacturing facility in Gaston and Flatrock Family Dentistry in Greenville. SEED also has completed projects for Palmetto Health USC Family Medicine in Forest Acres, the Raymond James corporate offices in the First Citizen’s Building on Main Street, The Heritage condos amenities renovation in Columbia, and the Classically Carolina Tennis Center of Camden.
SEED works on diverse projects but is mainly focused on the people, the families, business owners and staff behind those projects. Using “relationship-based design,” SEED listens carefully to the client’s mission and vision, goals and dreams, and then builds out the artistry and technical requirements of a project to achieve success.
