Seven New Greenlink Vehicles Being Readied for Service

July 25, 2011

GREENVILLE, SC, July 22, 2011 – Public Transportation Director Carl Jackson announced that the City has taken delivery of seven new buses to supplement the Greenlink fleet. The 35-foot, heavy-duty Gillig buses can carry up to 30 passengers with three wheelchair positions and were purchased at a cost of $371,651 each. All seven buses were funded at 100% with an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant from the Federal Transit Administration. The new buses have a low-floor design, which allows riders to step onto the bus at curb level, and are equipped with wheelchair ramps that make boarding the vehicle much easier for disabled passengers.

One of the new buses will be on display at the Greenville Transit Authority (GTA) board meeting on Monday, July 25 from 12:00 – 1:45 p.m. at County Square.

“Greenlink transit service delivery has improved exponentially over the past three years and the community is noticing our new buses, shelters and signage,” said David Mitchell, GTA board chairman. “In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, the new buses can be powered by biodiesel fuel.”

According to Jackson, Greenlink’s on-time performance now exceeds 90% and ridership and revenue have increased by an average of 7% over the past two years. “Adding seven new buses will go a long way to further the quality of transit services delivered to the community,” said Jackson.
