Small Business Lunch at Halls is June 2nd

The King Street Marketing Group and Halls Chophouse are pleased to welcome Alan T. Shao, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Business at the College of Charleston, as our guest speaker Thursday, June 2nd. While championing a “ready to work” theme for all business students, he has raised enrollment in business majors by more than 40 percent, now exceeding 2,300, making the School of Business the fastest growing School on the College of Charleston campus.

Dr. Shao established an MBA and MBA/JD with the Charleston School of Law plus added popular majors in Finance, Marketing and Supply Chain Management, while creating minors in Information Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Real Estate. He is a leader on campus in fundraising, raising more than $13 million during the Boundless Campaign.

He has served as a consultant to The Coca-Cola Company, Carolina Panthers of the National Football League, NASCAR’s Hendrick Motorsports, HSBC and Wells Fargo Banks, Nissan Motor Corporation and numerous other organizations.Since March 2009, Dr. Shao has served as Dean of the School of Business at the College of Charleston.

Prior to arriving in Charleston, he served a variety of leadership roles in Charlotte, including President of the North Carolina World Trade Association, President of the Charlotte World Trade Association, member of the Mayors International Cabinet, board member of the NC District Export Council, and NC Ports Professor of Marketing/Associate Dean at the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte for 19 years.He also briefly served on the faculty at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the University of South Florida in Tampa and Kennesaw State University in Atlanta.

Dr. Shao received his Ph.D. in Marketing with a minor in Statistics from the University of Alabama, and MBA and BS degrees from Old Dominion University. He also obtained Negotiation Certification from Harvard. Interestingly, he has three brothers who also have PhDs in various disciplines in business.

He established the highly regarded Wall of Honor to recognize transformative service and philanthropy to the School of Business; supported the establishment of the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Technology (ICAT) and Investment Program; expanded the Board of Governors to 50 leaders in business and government; established the Deans Student Forum; and is revamping the Student Advancement Center to enhance student advising in the School of Business.In Charleston, Dr. Shao has served on the boards of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Charleston Basketball Classic. He has written three books, including “Marketing Research: An Aid to Decision-Making,” published more than 50 scholarly journal articles, and made hundreds of presentations throughout the world.Dr. Shao has traveled to China more than 100 times and is an expert on AACSB International accreditation.

An avid runner, he has logged more than 65,000 miles.

Each month, Small Business Lunch at Halls features a distinguished speaker from the business, civic or political arenas upstairs at Halls Chophouse with an imaginative three-course meal prepared by Executive Chef Adam Jakins.
